Following the launch of GetGlue for iPhone in June 2010, the service has experienced significant growth and as of March 2011 there are now 1 Million users on GetGlue.
This major milestone and trajectory are a strong validation for the entire social entertainment space and confirmation of GetGlue’s leadership position in the market. GetGlue’s 1 Million users love socializing around the digital water cooler: connecting with friends, discovering new content, and earning rewards from our partners.
In addition to hitting 1 Million users, GetGlue has reached another significant milestone - 100 Million data points. These data points represent connections between people and the entertainment they’ve consumed, revealing insights about tastes and dynamics of entertainment consumption. With this milestone GetGlue now joins established internet properties like IMDB, Fandango, TV Guide, Yahoo!, and Amazon as a significant source of entertainment tastes.
The GetGlue network is now averaging over 1 check-in every second with as many as 10 check-ins per second during primetime. On an average day 500,000 new unique data points enter the GetGlue database. Using this data, GetGlue computes and displays real-time trends in content consumption and provides personalized recommendations.
Impact on Facebook, Twitter and Ratings
Lisa Hsia, a Senior Vice President of Bravo Digital Media has written a definitive piece about the impact on social media on ratings. She said: “There’s no question that the real-time conversations around TV shows on social networks — the virtual water cooler, if you will — enhance engagement and drive on-air ratings.”
GetGlue is playing a major role in facilitating the conversation and driving tune-ins. Every day, tens of thousands of check-ins flow from GetGlue to other social networks. Collectively, these check-ins reach tens of millions of friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter. During primetime, GetGlue is averaging 1 share per second to both Facebook and Twitter.
Specifically, GetGlue has a measurable impact on Twitter. During primetime, 3% - 20% of tweets about shows are coming from GetGlue. During the Oscars, GetGlue was the third most mentioned account on Twitter and 1/12 of the tweets that mentioned the word “Oscars” in the first 30 minutes of the telecast originated from GetGlue. Other shows have experienced similar stats:
- 10% of tweets during Californication’s season finale came from GetGlue
- 15% of tweets during a recent episode of A&E’s Breakout Kings came from GetGlue
- 3% of tweets that mentioned ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ during a recent episode of NBC’s hit show came from GetGlue
To date, 35 major networks, 10 major movie studios, both theatrical and home entertainment, as well as 5 major music labels and management companies have offered rewards to GetGlue users. Over 4 Million rewards have been unlocked for 200 popular TV shows, 50 movies and dozens of top artists.
We have been fortunate to help promote great brands like Glee, The Office, True Blood, Dexter, Psych, Justified, Jersey Shore, Conan, Ellen, Mythbusters, Pretty Little Liars, NOVA, Mad Men, Ghost Hunters, Southland, Harry Potter, Avatar, Tron: Legacy, Black Swan, Maroon 5, Duran Duran, Neon Trees and Adam Lambert just to name a few.
In addition, 25 partners have used the GetGlue platform to embed check-ins into their web sites, iPhone and iPad applications. Also, over 100 top shows are offering tiered discounts and coupons for their merchandise to GetGlue users. All of these great partnerships and the 1 Million registered users on GetGlue, are indicators of the emergence of the social entertainment market. Both brands and fans love connecting on GetGlue and we anticipate that the growth will continue in 2011. The evidence of this acceleration are check-ins, a key metric for GetGlue. In the first quarter of 2011 the service got as many check-ins as it did in all of 2010.
“We are always looking for ways to interact with and reward our fans, while also attracting new audiences to our networks,” said Gayle Weiswasser, Vice President of Social Media Communications, Discovery Communications. “GetGlue allows our viewers to share their love of our shows with friends and fans, which amplifies social media buzz and overall engagement with our brands.”
“As the first network with a series (Dexter™) to reach 100,000 check-ins, SHOWTIME congratulates GetGlue on achieving the one million user milestone, and is excited that more fans of original series are engaging with the stories and characters they love through this platform.” - Don Buckley, Senior Vice President, Digital Services, Showtime Networks Inc.
“Congratulations to the GetGlue team on reaching this impressive milestone,” said Jason Wagenheim, the Publisher of Entertainment Weekly. “They’ve been a great partner to work with and we’re excited to expand our relationship in the coming weeks and months.”
