We’re still two weeks away from the much-anticipated series premiere of Game of Thrones on HBO, and we couldn’t be more excited for what will likely be the TV event of the year. For the uninitiated, Game of Thrones is based on the first book in a series by bestselling author George R.R. Martin. You’ll find the books shelved in fantasy, but while there are elements of magic and strange creatures, the books have a far broader appeal than most of its shelfmates. Rather than focusing on a quest, A Game of Thrones is more about political intrigue and strong, flawed characters. There’s no definitive good or evil in the series, bringing humanity to a genre that’s far too often steeped in archetypes.
